BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — The City of Brookhaven's City Centre project had a setback after an issue with the color of the dome's mosaic glass.
Brookhaven Mayor John Park and the city council announced Monday afternoon that the mosaic glass recently installed looks brighter than they expected. The mayor and city council plan to take immediate steps to have the glass removed, writing in a statement that it doesn't reflect the city's signature, muted colors or align with the design vision.
"The Mayor and City Council deeply value the time and input of the thousands of residents who participated in the multi-year public engagement process that shaped the vision for the new City Centre," they wrote in their statement. "...The dome was always intended to be adaptable. The dome will remain open-air until further notice."
According to Brookhaven City Manager Christian Sigman, the pieces will go into storage for potential use in a public art project at a later date. Sigman said he reached out to their construction management firm for an exact material cost, but that the future of the dome is still in discussion. They decided to replace the glass after receiving comments shortly after installation began.
Installation of tiles, millwork, light fixtures, and railings is ongoing, while metal panel installation is set to be completed by the end of June, according to Brookhaven's most recent progress report on May 31.
On Thursday, 11Alive caught up with a few people to get their opinions. The response was mixed.
"I don’t think it’s too bright—I don’t think so," Coreianna said. She added, "I mean, I don’t see a problem with it honestly. I like the colors."
Brett said, "I was surprised—it seemed like a bold choice. I wasn’t crazy about the stucco they put on the side... I thought it was going to be a little nicer. But it seems the rest is coming together, and the glass just seemed out of place to me."
Jasmine hopes the city will change their mind.
"It brightens up the space because it’s a very plain building—so I really enjoy the top," she said. She added, "You should tell them to leave it up! Why? Because it’s going to be empty space—why not have beautiful lights and colors up there versus just a plain dome?"
Brookhaven plans for the City Centre to serve as a gathering space for business, community celebrations, and idea exchange, according to its website. The building is located at the corner of Peachtree Road and North Druid Hills Road on the previous long-term MARTA parking lot, which Brookhaven acquired in 2022. Development began about a year later in 2023.
According to an April report from our partners, the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the centre will open in late July. It's unclear how much the color replacement will cost at this time.
